A sheet with a story

See the wood before it becomes part of the project.

A veneer sheet is not just a species name on a shelf. It is a particular slice of a particular log, with its own color shifts, cathedral grain, curl, burl, or quiet straight grain. If the wood will be visible, that difference matters. It is the difference between hoping a material works and choosing one that already feels right for the piece you want to make.

Volpe Woodworks sells raw wood veneer for people who care about that choice. Whether you are restoring furniture, making a box, building a guitar part, or adding a striking panel to a larger project, you can inspect the actual sheet before adding it to your cart. The listing gives you the dimensions and a clear view of the piece, then Tom is available when a second opinion would help.

Choose with purpose

Start with the part of the project people will see.

For a furniture repair, begin with the surrounding wood. Look at the color, the scale of the grain, and whether the original surface has a plain, quartered, or figured character. A close species match is useful, but it is not the only thing that matters. A repair often looks more convincing when the grain direction and visual weight sit comfortably beside the existing piece.

For a new box, cabinet panel, instrument detail, or decorative object, give the figure room to work. A calm straight-grained sheet can bring order to a larger surface. A lively curl, burl, or unusual exotic can become the center of attention on a smaller panel. Think about where the sheet will be cut, whether a pair needs to open like a book, and which portion of the grain deserves the most visible place.

Raw veneer gives you that level of authorship. It also asks for a little planning. Choose a sheet with enough material for the finished area plus trim allowance, and check the listing closely before you buy. If a project needs consecutive sheets for a bookmatch, buy the material you need together. The veneer guide explains how sheets are measured, packed, and commonly used, while the current collection lets you compare real options side by side.

From selection to bench

Choose, plan, and work with confidence.

Find the right kind of sheet

Browse the shop by the wood that suits the job, from domestic favorites to unusual burls and exotics. Let the scale of the grain guide you. A small box lid may be the right home for a dramatic burl, while a broad cabinet door may call for a calmer figure or a sequence of related sheets.

Confirm the usable area

Read the dimensions as part of the design, not an afterthought. Veneer is usually trimmed after it is bonded, so leave enough margin to place and square the sheet without anxiety. For a repair, map the damaged area and surrounding grain before you order. For a matched panel, consider the cut lines before the material reaches the bench.

Prepare a simple first panel

Raw veneer rewards a flat substrate, a compatible adhesive, and even pressure while the bond cures. If you are new to the process, begin with a small flat panel and an offcut. Volpe’s practical veneer application guide walks through the fundamentals, from dry layout and cauls to trimming and finishing.

A material with range

Where a raw veneer sheet can take the work.

Veneer makes sense when the face of a project deserves a particular wood without the weight, cost, or movement of a solid board. It can give a stable panel the character of a figured maple, a walnut burl, or a clean quartered grain. It can also make a thoughtful repair possible when the visible surface matters more than replacing an entire piece of furniture.

That flexibility works best when the substrate and use are considered honestly. A flat, stable panel is a friendly place to start. Curves, large surfaces, fragile figure, and heavily used edges call for more preparation and a pressing method suited to the job. The right sheet is only one part of a good result, but it is the part you will see every day.

When a listing catches your eye, picture the finished surface rather than the full sheet alone. Which section will become the show face? Will the grain run with the length of the piece? Is there enough material for a reveal, a matching pair, or an unexpected trim pass? Those questions turn a beautiful sheet into a deliberate choice, and they are exactly the kind of details Tom can help you think through before you order.

Questions about wood veneer sheets

Are these the exact wood veneer sheets I will receive?

Yes. Volpe Woodworks photographs and lists the individual sheet or set being sold, so you can choose for its actual grain, color, figure, and size rather than from a generic sample.

How thick are raw wood veneer sheets?

Unless a listing says otherwise, Volpe’s veneer is typically standard 0.6 ± 0.1 mm, about 1/42 inch. Some domestic veneer is thicker and some sheets are thinner, so the listing is the best place to confirm a specific piece.

Can I use raw veneer for a furniture repair or small project?

Often, yes. Raw veneer can work beautifully for boxes, cabinet panels, furniture repairs, instrument work, and decorative details. Match the sheet’s size, grain, and figure to the visible area, and allow a little extra material for trimming.

How are veneer sheets shipped?

Most sheets ship rolled in a protected cylinder and then boxed. Lacewood and highly figured woods that do not bend well ship flat in sturdy cardboard. Orders typically leave on the next business day.
