$16.79

Purpleheart Veneer – 7.5 × 31 in., Approx. 1/42-Inch Thick

Each sheet is cut from genuine Peltogyne (Purpleheart), a South American hardwood prized for the deep violet color it develops after milling. Freshly cut surfaces appear brownish-purple; exposure to light and air intensifies the hue over days to weeks. Color depth varies naturally from sheet to sheet based on growing conditions and position in the log — this is a normal characteristic of the species, not a defect.

Grain and Color Variation

Purpleheart displays a straight to slightly interlocked grain with a fine, uniform texture. Because every sheet is cut from a natural log, you will see differences in figure, stripe, and violet intensity between sheets. If you need closely matched sheets for a single project, order several at once and select from what arrives — excess sheets store well.

Practical Project Guidance

  • Inlay and marquetry: At 1/42 in., this veneer cuts cleanly with a craft knife or veneer saw. Score the cut line twice before breaking to minimize tear-out on the face.
  • Furniture panels and doors: Apply to a stable substrate (MDF or Baltic birch plywood) with cold-press or contact cement. Clamp evenly for at least 30 minutes.
  • Small boxes and frames: The 7.5 × 31 in. format yields efficient strips for edge-banding or face panels on jewelry boxes, picture frames, and serving trays.
  • Finishing: Purpleheart responds well to oil-based or water-based finishes. UV-inhibiting topcoats help maintain violet color over time. Avoid fuming — ammonia darkens the wood unevenly.

Working Notes

Store flat, away from direct sunlight and humidity swings, until you are ready to use the sheet. Keep the protective packaging in place — thin raw veneer can develop slight curl if exposed to dry air before glue-up.
